Flight Paths to each other exhibition (artwork)
Glasgow school of art Students Union
21 september to 30 september
This is an exhibition of original artwork for record sleeves and fanzines, hand-printed posters and T-shirts, badges and other musical jumble based around bands whose creativity and involvement reaches beyond making music to all aspects of releasing a record and communicating with an international network of people with similar passions.
Bands who have contributed share the view that ideas, originality and feeling are more important than technical proficiency and commercial potential. Firstly this is reflected in their music, a life-consuming passion. But with their need for expression and desire to communicate, creativity flows naturally into other areas, especially the design of the record sleeves, providing continuity between the music and the record. To buy such a record is to feel you can become involved in a loose informal network of like-minded people.
Contributors include : Some Velvet Sidewalk, Daniel Johnston, Huggy Bear, Sonic Youth, The Pastels and Postcard. A rare opportunity to see such gems as a Swell Mpas collage, a hand-painted guitar by Jad Fair, a Stereolab pencil… and to be inspired.
