11-1992 / Friends Of The Pastels newsletter / Katrina meets David on the slope It
isn't everyone who knows just what the Pastels N¡2 axeman is all about.
I'm here to change all that. He is David. David Keegan of the Shop Assistants
- defunct, sadly. He is David Keegan of the Pastels. Katrina : David, I
know you work as a ski instructor during the winter. Are you optimistic about
the ski season this year? David : Yes, I am. The skiing started earlier
than ever before this year, and also I've got a brand new ski instructor's uniform
- it's bright red so my class can find me in the snow if I get lost. K :
Good, good. Tell me, how did you get into cool music in the first place? D
: Well, when I was young I always shared a bedroom with my brother. So when he
moved out I felt like I needed something to keep evil spirits away, and the best
thing I could think of was to have something modern and electrical on. That's
why I started listening to the radio late at night, and it just so happened that
John Peel was on then. And that's how I got into independant music. K :
What are your favourite records and who are your favourite guitar players?
D
: Well, today I've been listening to Sugarcane by Sonic Youth, Bear Up Bison by
Shonen Knife, 390¡ of Simultaed Stereo by Pere Ubu (but I took that one
off halfaway through) and So Good To Know You (new song by the Pastels). So I
really like all these but my favourites are probably Leave Home by the Ramones
and ooh em yes, Jane From Occupied Europe by the Swell Maps. My favourite guitarists
are J. Mascis and Thurston and Lee. I don't rate anyone else.K : What do you
think about the Shop Assistants now and what's your favourite Shop Assistant song? D:
I don't think much about them. Tried To Tell You is definitely my favourite. K
: Are you surprised you've ended up playing with the Pastels and are the new Pastels
songs really as great as all the Pastels think? D : Yes and yes. K
: Please reveal something about yourself that none of the Friends know about. D
: How about this - my right foot is bigger than my left! K : Great, but
now everyone'll be staring at your feet whenever we play. D : That's okay,
I'll have my shoes on. K : Oh yes. Last question. Will you make your fortune
playing with the Pastels? D : No that's stupid. Phew. K : Thanks,
David. Well I guess I'll see you at the next rehearsal. Bye.
