/ The Scotsman / Appendix Out
A review of "Daylight Saving".
Appendix Out's main-man Ali Roberts graduated
from McLaren HS, Callander in 1995 as "the
boy most likely to", broke a few hearts along
the way, and headed for the city, ostensibly to
study Mediaeval English. Pretty soon he was hitting
the Glasgow folk bars, cultivating some facial
growth and getting discovered by Will Oldham of
Palace, in town to seek out an authentically gothic
Caledonian air. This then is Appendix Out's second
LP for hip US independent Drag City. More enchanted
than Arab Strap, not as pop as Belle & Sebastian,
it ought to appeal to fans of both bands. Slurred
yet strangely exact; this is Ali's boldest move
yet, his strongest collection of songs. The sound
of a young man hitting his stride.
