“Between 1983 and 1985 we went into the studio on average once a year. It would be fair to say that in between times we would not be over concerned with the group’s affairs, least of all with writing songs. A visit to the studio was a surprise and so Brian and I would have to come up with something fairly spontaneously. Predictably we’d be very influenced by what we were listening to that day—I’m truly shocked to see that Yvonne Elliman’s ‘If I Can’t Have You’ crops up in ‘Million Tears.’ It must have been on the radio. the studios we used were genearlly speaking not of the highest quality and the engineers unsympathetic or incompetent, and quite often both. To be truthful we couldn’t really play either.”
