p.54
The Pastels new album arrives in May. In celebration
of the fact Stephen Pastel was requested to utter
a few words as a discographical lead-in, and obliged
with the following :
"As far as the new album's concerned, people
who are familiar with our stuff will be pleased
to learn that we're still musical retards. I must
admit though, that it's a bit darker than some
of the other things we've done. The record was
made with the help of most of the same people
I've worked with over the years. Eugene from The
Vaselines makes an appearence on it. He was with
the band for about a year and his playing only
served to make us feel even more like incompetents.
But our association ended after one gig during
wich he got completely plastered and rocked out
of time right up to the moment he eventually fell
off the stage.
"We're with Chapter 22 now. We did have a
good relationship with Creation but the problem
was that Alan McGee always wanted confrontation
with the record business and that wasn't what
we were into. Then came Glass, who were nice people
but a bit slow at paying royalties (Glass
were one of the labels who suffered because their
records were distributed through the ill-fated
Red Rhino). Next came a long period during
which we just twiddled our thumbs. It was very
difficult because we recorded most of the new
album last summer and were sat there wondering
if it was ever going to come out. Thankfully we
were able to record some additional tracks this
year.
"The first single, Baby You're Just You,
is out this month and the completed album should
be in the shops during early May. You know, when
we started and Jonathan Richamn was our guiding
light, all we wanted to do was to make honest
records. And maybe we've fallen short of our aims
but the new album is easliy the best record we've
come up with to date."
